For eight millennia, the Night's Watch has served as Westeros’ northern shield, an ancient order sworn to hold back the wildlings and the supernatural terrors lurking beyond the Wall. Lore & Background
Service within the Watch divides into three corps: Rangers who scour the frozen wilderness beyond the Wall; Builders who maintain the castles and the ice itself; and Stewards who manage logistics and survival. Though they remain politically neutral in southern wars, answering only to their elected Lord Commander, their duty is rooted in an ancient pact that once secured peace between men and the Others—a pact few in the south remember, but one that keeps the darkness at bay.
In Their Own Story
Wind whipped through Castle Black's shattered arches, carrying the scent of iron and deep freeze. A recruit tightened his grip on a rusted spear, breath misting before him as he stared into the white void north of the ice. Beside him, a veteran ranger spat into the snow, frostbite mapping lines across his weathered face. 'Listen close,' the old man whispered, eyes locked on the treeline. 'You can hear them.' The recruit swallowed hard. While kings in the south bled for gold thrones, here at the edge of the world, they fought to keep the winter from swallowing everything.

The Watch operates as a sovereign military entity, holding no lands and swearing fealty to no king; upon taking vows, members are legally dead in the eyes of the Seven Kingdoms. Leadership falls to a Lord Commander elected for life by the brothers themselves. Historically maintaining three castles along the Wall, only Castle Black remains active in modern times. While the order attempts neutrality during civil wars, dwindling numbers and resurgent ancient threats have forced a reevaluation of their role from a forgotten relic into the realm's last line of defense against extinction.
