As the threat of Others faded into myth and the Watch dwindled, sixteen were abandoned; only three remained manned. Castle Black survived due to its unique 'Gate,' a tunnel bored directly through the living ice, allowing rangers to deploy swiftly without climbing the barrier. The fortress sprawls as a complex of stone and wood—Great Hall, sept, library—all weathered by centuries of occupation and neglect. While the main keep holds firm, outer towers have crumbled into drifts of snow.
